Chalkboard Style Name Tags

Hi There!

I wanted to share a little project I worked on recently- our new store name tags!

Name tags in general need to be easy to read and let people know that whoever is wearing one is an employee.  Since we are a scrapbooking store, we needed to kick ours up a notch and also make them creative and cute!

I have been loving the chalkboard craze that is popular right now and decided to use that as my inspiration for our new tags.  With only a few supplies and my stash of  Lawn Fawn stamps I got to work creating!

I used Lawn Fawn's Quinn's ABC's to stamp our names.  I used smaller stamps from many of their other sets as accents to make each tag unique.  I added fish and bubbles  from the Critters Under the Sea set to Andrea's!  Pam's features the happy sunshine from the Sunny Skies set!

The chalkboard look is easy to achieve!  You need a few products: cute stamps, black cardstock, Versamark ink, white pigment ink, white embossing powder, a white pen, and a sponge or blending tool.  I also used a white mist to add some speckles.  Here are the steps I took to create this tag:

1. Cut or die cut tag from smooth black cardstock.  Punch a circle and adhere it where you want to add your ribbon later.  Cut off excess circle bit.

2. Stamp your name using Versamark ink and emboss using white embossing powder and your heat gun.  I did as many letters as I could in one shot but if I had to stamp it twice because the name was longer, I embossed between stamping.  I also used an Embossing Buddy to keep the stray embossing powder flecks away.

3. Stamp your accent stamps using Versamark ink and emboss using white embossing powder.

4. Doodle a line around the outside edge with your white pen.  You can use a ruler if you have a hard time with straight lines but I like the imperfect look you get without one even more!

5.  Once your pen work is dry, get out your sponge or blending tool and your white ink.  Sponge around the edges first, rubbing towards the center.  Lightly sponge some ink in a few different spots as well to create that dirty chalkboard look

6.  Flick a little bit of white mist on to the tag if you like that look!  Finish off your tags with pretty ribbon and twine!

Now just because we made name tags with this fun technique doesn't mean you have to!  I think it would work great on cards, scrapbook pages and on Project Life inserts!  I hope we've inspired you to get out your stamps and try the chalkboard technique!

BasicGrey Page of the Month for April

The BasicGrey Kit of the Month is offered as a year long program or ala cart (meaning month by month or until sold out)!

The page of the month program is a year long program where each month you will receive a kit chock-full of the latest and greatest products that coordinate to create a fabulous double page layout. You will also receive bonus projects so that you can create a fun card or two and possibly a third single page layout. The new program begins this month on March 26 at 6pm. If you can't make the classes, you can still purchase the kit with full color instructions! Classes are generally held on the third Tuesday of each month (with a few exceptions).

New Mini Book Classes with Sue!

We are thrilled to be adding a new teacher to our April calendar!  Sue Woolard will be joining our team, specializing in mini books!  She has a great eye for detail and I'm sure you will love her style!

Sue has been in the paper crafting business for over a decade and has taught classes at Creating Keepsakes, Scrapbook Expo and Midwest Scrapbook conventions across the U.S. She has conducted seminars for scrapbook and craft store-owners at CHA and Memory Trends. Her passion for teaching started at the age of 14 and has continued throughout her life. When she is not teaching, she is often found behind the lens of her camera, throwing a ball for her obsessed Border Collie or re-purposing found items.

Her first set of classes are on the calendar for April 27th.  Here is a little information about each of the wonderful projects she will be teaching:

My Girl Mini Album

Saturday, April 27 1:30-3:30pm

Create a fabulous 6 page (12 sides) mini album, complete with chipboard, brads, buttons, envelopes, tags, pockets, layers, ribbons and embellishments galore. If you have never done a mini-album, they are a great way to complete an entire album quickly. The “My Girl” mini is ideal for photos of girls of all ages and makes a great brag book or coffee table book. Class includes detailed -color photo instructions,  album, all papers and embellishments.

Please bring:  12 inch paper trimmer, detail scissors, wet adhesive for chipboard- Helmar 450 or Fabric-Tac, dry adhesive, brown ink for edging and plenty of foam tape, such as Copic or Scotch 3D. If you have a corner rounder, Crop-A-Dile, paper piercer, and pencil- please bring those as well, but these will be available to share.

Boys Rule Mini Album

Saturday, April 27 4:00-6:00pm

Distress Paints In Action!

Good Morning!

Hope your Friday is off to a great start! I wanted to share one of my favorite products with you today- Tim Holtz Distress Paints by Ranger! There are so many ways you can use these paints and I've only just begun to experiment with them! Here is a card I made using them:

And, so you can see the process, I created a video just for you!



Now, we are just getting started with videos and as you can see, are still learning the ropes. We have set up a  Scrapdoodles YouTube Channel and hope to bring you more videos in the future!

Design Team Wednesday-Cosmo Cricket

As soon as I saw the Cosmo Cricket "Honky Tonk" and "TV Dinner" collections, I knew exactly which photos to use for my layouts. They have a fun, vintage look to them which went perfectly with family photos that were taken in downtown Pensacola, FL about 4 years ago. I loved the bold patterns and rustic colors!
For my first layout, I used the papers from the "Honky Tonk" collection and embellished with the "Honky Tonk" cardstock stickers. I also used coordinating buttons from the store and added red twine from my stash. I ripped the edge of the orange star paper to give it a more vintage look. Finally, I punched out a circle from brown cardstock paper using my die cut machine and used dimensionals to make it stick out.

For my next layout, I used green embossed cardstock from the store to give the layout some texture. I also used letters from the "Honky Tonk" cardstock stickers to spell out "family." I really love the the variety of these of cardstock stickers! Using some scraps, I made a small banner and added buttons and twine to make it pop.

With such gorgeous paper, I just had to make another layout! I combined both paper collections for this one, and continued to embellish with the cardstock stickers. These two collections go so well together!
