Employee Favorite Product of the Week!

Ranger Distress Paints

Most of you who know me, know that I love mixed media. Give me some paint and I have happy :)  I teach the Art Journaling Workshop and we play with all sorts of mediums. Right now I am a very happy girl with all the new product that has been arriving!

At the Craft and Hobby Trade Show I was lucky enough to take a class with Tim Holtz. We played with his new Distress Paints. I love them!!! They are very fluid water-based acrylic paints and work on multiple surfaces. Tim and Ranger developed these special paints to be reactive with water just like Distress Inks and Distress Stains—perfect to accomplish a wide variety of artistic techniques. They have a convenient dabber system for easy application. You can use them with stamps, paper, wood, metal, glass, plastic and so much more for a matte finish on your projects! Once they are dried they are permanent.

If you want to learn more about them, we will be playing with them at my Art Journaling class on Friday, Feb. 15 at 10:30 am.

■24 colors that coordinate with the Distress palette
■Very fluid water-based, multi-surface acrylic paint
■Timeless matte finish paint in 1 oz. bottles
■Reactive with water like Distress Inks and Stains
■Convenient dabber system application

Design Team Wednesday

Hello again everyone! I'm excited to share my projects with you all this week. February is only a few days away which means the countdown to Valentine's Day has begun.  I always have a hard time figuring out what to give my husband for Valentine's Day so when I saw the On Trend line by Crate Paper I had a spark of inspiration!

What I love about this line is that it isn't in your face Valentine's day.  There are a few papers that come with multiple tags and phrases.  When I saw that the papers were easily pulled apart I was excited to see what I could do with them.

My first project was a set of frames.  I wanted to create something that was sophisticated, not overly girly, and could stand alone or compliment each other as a group.  I had a few unfinished wood frames that I thought would look great spruced up with this line.

Each frame is a different shape yet they sit well together.  It only took two sheets of paper cover all three (I love Modge Podge!).
The LOVE letters were cut from the On Trend paper line and I used red paint to give it a bit more depth so it would jump off the background papers.
This frame was my favorite.  The So Lovely saying was randomly placed along the edges of the tag paper. I cut them out and added a piece of fiber so they would drape across the frame. Then I modge podged the entire thing to make sure it would all stay in place.

After finishing the frames I put together a scrapbook page using the On Trend papers.
Instead of cutting all of the tags apart I used them as a border. All of the pattern paper, tags, and the So Very Lovely square are from the On Trend paper line. The solid paper is Bazzil and the flowers were from my stash.

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day and that these projects help to inspire you to create something for the one you love most!

Silhouette Sketch Pens

If you’ve been in the store and talked to me in the last month or so, you probably have heard that I received a Silhouette Cameo for Christmas. I just love it. In my free time (insert snicker here), I’ve been playing around with some of its features, which is how I discovered the Silhouette Sketch Pens.

Sketch pens come in a variety of colors. I have a pack of the primary colors. They are very simple to use. You simply take the blade out of the Cameo, remove the pen top, place the pen in the blade holder, and watch the magic happen.

I downloaded a couple of the sketch designs from the Silhouette on-line store to see how I liked the effect. In the blink of an eye I had the appearance of hand drawn artwork to use in my projects. You can also use multiple colors of pens for one image. The Silhouette Cameo blog has a tutorial that gives step by step directions, and screen shots. If you have more artistic talent than this girl, you could even sketch your own designs!

Here is a card I made using a design from the Silhouette on-line store, and five different sketch pens. I just love how it turned out.

We are currently selling individual sketch pens at store. Come in and pick one up. Experiment with it, and then join me in begging Cheryl to order more. We also carry tons of other accessories for your Cameo; download cards, blades, mats, vinyl, adhesive sheets, etching crème, and more.

Happy Crafting, Rachael

Design Team Wednesday

I love the products that I got to highlight this week! For all 3 layouts, I used paper from Studio Calico "Wonderland Collection" and Crate Paper "Sleigh Ride White Christmas." If you haven't had a chance to look at these, you really need to stop by the store! Both collections have very fun winter theme papers which are perfect for scrapbooking those winter memories. I used Now & Then brads and We R Memory Keepers "Winter Frost" chipboard for accents. I also used Little Yellow Bicycle vellum tape strips to add some neat borders. To make it pop out more, I put the vellum on cardstock paper before adding it to my pages. I added some red twine to some of the sentiments to blend  it all together.

For my last layout, I used some ribbon from American crafts to accent the bottom of the page and to make a nice bow for the corner. I also used a We R Memory Keepers Winter Flower to add some dimension.
Stop by the store to see the layouts and to check out these awesome products!

Product of the Week: Magazine Idea Books

I’m Amy Lutz, the “weekend girl”. I’ve caught the “bug”…and it’s not the one going around. It’s the card making bug! I was always a sewer and a scrapbooker, but I found these Idea books inspiring and daring me to stretch myself! I felt like I didn’t have a concrete enough grasp of the construction with design and layering on a card. These books really show the range, from beginner to expert, what can be done!
These are the first two cards I made using certain aspects of designs I found in the book. I liked the banner idea, but didn’t have a straight stamp so I made it work for this birthday card.

The second notecard was based on the file folder idea. I really love how easily the cards come together and the versatility of each example.

I looked at the multiple examples shown in the book and when I thought about the cost as both an investment and a reference tool, it was a great deal! I will save a good deal of money making my own cards! I hope you are inspired, too

Design Team Wednesday

While we are all eagerly awaiting the newly released lines after this last weekend's CHA Winter Show, (check out our Pinterest board for some of them) I wanted to highlight two lines that you may have missed (and you don't want to miss these).  First up is a beautiful collection from Teresa Collins called "Now & Then" that came out last fall.  It's a fun mix of blues and pinks alongside wood veneer backgrounds and other classic Teresa Collins patterns. For my first layout I chose this floral design but wanted to tone it down a bit for my layout.  I created a heart mask first and then applied a layer of gesso which I spread directly onto the paper with a spatula (okay a credit card).  I love the texture that came out and the way the patterned paper comes through.  I used a pen to create stitching around the heart and page border.  The title was cut with my die cut machine using Teresa Collins "Sophisticated" cartridge.  I layered a few more elements from the paper collection and a strip of brown polka dot Washi tape to bring it all together.  You'll want to try this masking technique yourself!  It's a great way to change the look of any patterned paper or tone one down and still keep the awesome design work.

This second layout uses a few more selections from the Now & Then collection.  I thought the blues went well with these snowy outdoor photos from last year.  I cut a few snowflakes directly into the main sheet with my die cut machine.  Layering the darker patterned paper behind the white ledger paper  as well as using the die cut snowflakes on top creates lots of interest and dimension to this page.
Right now, Scrapdoodles has most of this collection in stock, including a beautiful coordinating button/brad collection and border strips.  Go check it out!

I have one more layout to share this week and it uses this beautiful sunny paper from Authentique.  This collection is relatively new and it's perfectly named "Renew" as there are many spring elements to this line.  You can check out the whole collection online here, or go see it in person at Scrapdoodles ;).  I've been meaning to scrap a page about Hannah with "sunshine" in the title (we sing "You Are My Sunshine" every night) and knew these papers would be perfect as soon as I saw them.  On my page I used some of the fun new "Puzzle Pieces" elements that coordinate with this line and I fussy-cut the swirls and flowers from one of the sheets of patterned paper.  Scrapdoodles also has both the 8x8 and 6x6 paper pads which are perfect for all kinds of projects.  You'll love the colors in this versatile collection - the blues and yellows with the black highlights are really awesome and need to be seen in person.  It's become one of my favorites so I may have to stop by and pick up that 8x8 pack soon!  Happy Scrappin' everyone! ~Karen

Exploding Mini Album

Hello everyone! Pat here. It's been a long time since I have posted a class.  Found my mojo, and here I am with real fun project!  Yep!  An exploding mini album.  It looks like a wrapped present in the shape of a square box.  Open the lid, and the pages flop out! Made entirely out of paper, can be used as a scrapbook for you or someone else.  There are enough pages for 8-12 3x3 photos.

I used Authentique's Lively paperline, brown sparkly tulle, pearl trim, a button,  Stickles chunky crystal glitter glue, vintage stamps, and Ranger distress ink, walnut stain.

Stop on by the store and ask an associate to show the "Exploding Mini Album"...it really is a fun project.

This class will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Cost will be $18.00 per person.  Class limit is 8, due to product availability.  Please sign up 48 hours in advance,  so that I can make all the necessary preparations.

Please bring a trimmer, corner rounder, scoring tool, bone folder, a quality glue runner, and 450 adhesive.

Design Team Wednesday

Happy New Year everyone! I am back with some inspiration for Valentine's Day. When Cheryl told me to check out the new Authentique Valentine's line, "Lovely", I immediately fell in love... hee hee. After looking at the paper and cardstock stickers, I decided to use old photos of my grandparents. I felt like the collection had a nice blend of modern and vintage appeal, which lent itself to both old photos and new cards.
The first layout incorporated various cardstock stickers and patterned paper from the collection. I created a "rose" using ribbon from the store. Since I bought it by the yard, I am not sure of the brand, though the ladies at Doodles will know!

The second layout played more upon the reds and blacks in this collection. I felt these colors beautifully complemeted this picture. Old photos are so wonderful, aren't they? I used the same ribbon here as well.

This card might be one of my all time faves. I think the "tickets" worked perfectly on cardstock strips, and are tucked inside the bottom half of the card. They can be "cashed in" by your Valentine!

The second card again utilized the rosy colors in this collection. The glittered buttons are made by Recollections. I love how the same collection offers such a variation between soft and delicate; and bold and playful.

Stop by the store and grab some of this amazing Authentique line to show your love!

I saw this Winter Frost collection from We R Memory Keepers in Scrapdoodles and fell in love with it. There is an entire line of double sided paper with different textures and tags. Scrapdoodles also carries the extra embellishments that come with this line. I loved the buttons and couldn't wait to create with them. This paper didn't remind me of Christmas, but the days that you spend at home in front of the fire when it is icy and cold outside. We have had a couple of those days here in Northern Virginia so I used that inspiration for my layout.

I love working with different textures and lots and lots of layering. The poem is printed on sheer fabric. (For directions on printing on fabric click here and scroll to the bottom of the blog.) I also cut out some snowflakes using the same fabric. I cut some snowflakes using my Silhouette and others with my Sizzix. I layered about 4 - 5 snowflakes on top of each other. The buttons are from the Winter Frost collection.

I also created the card below with a little of my left over paper. The bottom of the globe and ribbon was cut using my Silhoutte machine.

Stay warm and Scrap Happy!!
