Design Team Wednesday

I have eclectic taste... and you know I like to mix and match. Neither of these pieces of paper are very patriotic on their own but, paired up with the flag background in these pics it screams "All American." The blue paper is from Authentique and the red one and the "patches" are Little Yellow Bicycle.

Loved this line... from My Mind's Eye. This is a picture of my grandparents back in the 60's. They have definitely followed their hearts... they've been married for 60+ years. I love black and white photography, and thought the pops of color and the honeycomb pattern really worked well together.

More Mind's Eye papers... they are my absolute favorites. Again, I'm mixing in some other elements, some faux ribbon, hand-dyed using distress inks, and a cardstock sticker "loop" from Simple Stories.

Bo Bunny, My Mind's Eye and Crate Paper papers team up to create this layout featuring a piece of art from my fav artist, Anahata Katkin. Busy? Maybe but it reminds me of her artwork. If my layouts inspire you to try anything... mix it up. Pull out your papers and embellishments and go crazy.

Happy Creating... 'til next time.

Shadow Cats Advocates Cat Food Drive

We are proud to host a cat food drive benefiting Shadow Cats Advocates, a non-profit organization to provide assistance to all the abandoned and forgotten (feral) cats throughout the greater Fredericksburg, Virginia area, including the counties of Stafford and Spotsylvania. During this time of year, they are constantly taking in new families of cats and domesticating kittens for adoption. They are in dire need of extra food at this time. We will be accepting cat food donations from now until May 20th, 2012. If you would like to donate, please drop off items at the store between business hours.

If you are attending the National Scrapbook Day Crop on May 4-5, we are offering a special 25% discount off of one item (no Cameo, class kit, crops, or events) to any attendees who bring a cat food donation.

Thank you for supporting such a wonderful cause!

Design Team Wednesday

Hi and happy Wednesday! I used some fun new Studio Calico products for my projects today. I got out the new Take Note and Abroad lines, some of the new Wood Veneer shapes, new Mister Huey's Color Mist colors, and some of the new stamps!

We'll start with a card.I used the Abroad 6x6 Paper Pack for this one. (I love the 6x6 packs for card making and Project Life!) I also used the Airmail stamp set and a Wood Veneer from the Transportation pack. Loving those teensy little cars, bicycles, planes, and boats in that set!

Next up is a card using the Wonderful World and Calico Border stamp sets along with a bunch of Mister Huey's mists. I stamped the butterflies in Distress Embossing Ink and embossed them with clear embossing powder and then sprayed over them with the mists so that the butterflies underneath resisted the ink. (here's a tip, if you need a specific color of mist - like purple - you can mix the colors together in a mini mister, i used Pretty Pink and Powder Blue to make my purple mist.)

My last card was really quick and simple but ended up being my favorite. The background is a paper from the Take Note 6x6 Paper Pack. I stamped the sentiment and world from the Wonderful World set and the arrow from Airmail. I topped the arrow off with a wood veneer arrow. Great graduation card.

My layout is really my favorite project from this batch. I used lots of bits and pieces from the Take Note Collection, some Wood Veneers, Mister Huey's Mists, and stamps from Weekdays, Please Note, and Hey Y'all. I added some splatter to the background by unscrewing the nozzles of the Mister Huey's and just flicking the ink around on paper. I added a little bit of stitching around the bottom right corner. (i admit, i had intended to stitch around the whole page, but my bobbin ran out of thread and I decided to just go with it!) The wood veneer shapes take chalk ink really well, that heart in the top right corner was inked up with some Prima chalk ink.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting! Have a great week :)

Design Team Wednesday

Happy Wednesday! I have 3 layouts to share with you today, all inspired by pretty papers and Pinterest.  The papers I used are from two different Teresa Collins collections and the layouts are "scraplifted" from layouts I first spotted on Pinterest.  (original links are on my blog).  This trip to Scrapdoodles, I stumbled upon these two awesome collections by Teresa Collins that I had somehow missed before: Fabrications (see the collection) and Spring Fling (see the collection).   The first layout is made with "Fabrications".  This paper almost feels like fabric- it's thick and fibrous.  It was fun to play with some distressing on the edges, giving your layouts a natural bit of dimension.  The colors - especially the blue and yellow - are so cheery and really pop when paired up with the neutrals.

This next set of layouts is also made with Teresa Collins papers, her "Spring Fling" line.  The colors and patterns are bright and fun.  Again, I was inspired by layouts first seen on Pinterest.  This chevron pattern tutorial can be found here.  It was easy to piece together using small 1x3 inch strips.  I sewed and roughed up the edges a bit to add a little dimension.  It adds just the right pop of color while still keeping these cute photos of H. and daddy at the forefront.
As soon as I spotted this pleated circle I knew I wanted to try it out, too.  It's actually quite easy to do.  The original looks much more perfect than mine, but I'm good with that :)  Just pleat several strips of paper.  I used a bit of distress ink and then positioned them as I sewed (with my sewing machine) them directly onto the large scallop circle.  Then I just layered all kinds of die cuts (all from Teresa Collins' "Spring Fling"), some lace trim (October Afternoon) and a few gems to complete the look.
If you're reading this blog, then you probably are somewhat "addicted" to pretty papers like me.  I recommend you scratch that itch and head into Scrapdoodles.  :)  Ask the girls where to find the "good stuff" from Teresa Collins and pick out a few pretties to take home with you.  Then create something beautiful!  Happy Scrappin'!  ~Karen

Design Team Wednesday

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Easter week! Things have been crazy busy at my house recently, so I've been focusing on simple pages that (at least theoretically) come together quickly. My first page was inspired by a beautiful layout by Lisa Truesdell that I found on Pinterest. The strips are pieced together using a 6x6 Teresa Collins pad, and some of the strips are Tim Holtz tissue tapes. (The cute ribbon was a gift from a friend, who also stitched the little tag for me.) I lightly adhered a heart shape to my page and sprayed Mister Huey's Classic Calico mist over it all, then removed the heart and hand-stitched around the masked shape. The fleur-de-lis shapes were cut on my Silhouette.
I really wanted the photos to be the stars of this layout, so I kept it very simple, just adding a few pieces from October Afternoon's Farmhouse Flower Sack and a couple of brads. Naturally, the masked title was courtesy of my Silhouette and October Afternoon's Robot Blue Sprinklers. The cute little chevron sack was a gift from another friend...scrappy pals are the best.
My final page for today really pulled together a bunch of leftover bits and pieces from different manufacturers and lines, including Bo Bunny dotted cardstock, My Mind's Eye patterned paper, trim, and chipboard stickers, a Pink Paislee wooden alpha, and an October Afternoon label, Miscellany banner, and button.
